Business Plan Sections

In preparing a solar business plan, off-the-shelf templates and software almost always fail in achieving goals including raising capital.  For example, they commonly neglect important sections and sub-sections needed, such as those addressing exit strategy and risk factors. Each section of your solar business plan needs to be complete and detailed, yet concise and to the point. Also, each section needs to be well-integrated with the rest of the document. For example, does your solar marketing plan include actions based on the market analysis, which includes competitive analysis? Does it complement the revenue and related expense assumptions in your forecasts?  Each section needs to stand on its own, yet support and be consistent with the contents of other sections.  Plus, you need a great Executive Summary to get you in the door, as few want to review a lengthy plan until interested.

This is not an all-inclusive list of plan sections, as presentation varies depending on the type of business, e.g. a Web site-based firm versus a manufacturing company, or a company utilizing a new technology versus an established technology.
